CHLOÉ CORIOLAN

(St. John's)

The YouTube Star

"I just want to grow as a person and a content creator. Every day I think about how I can be the best version of myself."

Where did you grow up?

Long Island, New York.

Who is your role model?

My mom and dad.

Where do you live now?

Long Island, New York.

What is your theme song?

Surprise Yourself by Jack Garrett.

One day after school, Chloé was bored and decided to start a YouTube channel. She loved watching YouTube videos and had a few ideas of her own. Her first video was a hair tutorial. “I remember having no idea what I was doing but it was still so much fun,” Chloé reminisced.

Since posting that first video, Chloé’s YouTube fame has grown exponentially. She now has more than 86,000 subscribers and more than 3 million views across her channel. Chloé films and edits all of her videos. She learns new editing skills through online tutorials and lots of trial and error. Her videos include makeup, hair and fashion tutorials, but her favorite videos to make are vlogs. In these, she shares more about her life and experiments with new editing styles.

Over the years, Chloé felt she got caught up in comparing herself to other popular YouTubers. She found herself trying to be more like them rather than just being herself, so she took a break from YouTube. She reflected on what she truly wants her channel to be and who she is as an individual.

Now, she’s back on YouTube and ready to continue creating. “I plan to stop comparing myself to other people, and to start being unapologetically myself,” Chloé shared. “It’s always important to stay true to who you are and know that you are more than enough. That’s part of the journey that I’m currently on, and the best part? I get to do it with a community.”

Extended Interview

Why do you love making YouTube videos?

My YouTube channel has always been a great creative outlet for me to express myself and connect with other people through my videos. I love finding new ways to tell a story and share my thoughts, ideas and favorite things.

How did you discover your passion for making these videos?

My passion for creating videos really grew over time. With each video I made, I realized how much I enjoyed the entire process – from starting out with an idea to clicking the “upload” button on a finished product.

Why did you decide to start your YouTube channel?

I actually started my channel because I was bored one day after school. I already loved watching other YouTubers and I had a few ideas of my own, so I decided to give it a go!

Have you always felt comfortable in front of a camera?

Being in front of a camera surprisingly came pretty natural to me, but it still took some getting used to when I first got started.

How do you define success?

To me, success is being surrounded by people that make you happy and being able to wake up every morning and do what you love.

What motivates you?

I just want to grow as a person and a content creator. Every day I think about how I can be the best version of myself and what I can do to make that happen.

Where do you find inspiration for your videos?

I’m often inspired by other creative people, movies, music and books. I’ll even have a conversation with a friend and think to myself, “Wait... that’s a great idea for a video.”

Did you ever expect to have more than 86,000 subscribers?

When I first started, I had no idea so many people would like my videos enough to subscribe, but I’m so grateful for each and every one of them.

What was your very first YouTube video about?

My very first video was actually a hair tutorial where I took a headband with extra fabric at the bottom and I incorporated that fabric into two braids on either side of my head. I remember having no idea what I was doing but it was still so much fun.

What do you call your genre of videos? It seems like you have a mix between beauty, fashion, food and advice.

I’d say that all of the videos I create fall under the “lifestyle” genre.

What are your favorite types of videos to create?

My favorite videos to make are vlogs where I get to share my life while also experimenting with new editing styles. The more creative I could get with a video, the more excited I am to make it.

Do you edit all your own videos? How did you learn to do that?

Yes, I edit everything on my own! I learned through tons of online tutorials and tons of trial and error.

In your most recent video, “A Fresh Start,” you said you felt you were losing your own personality for a while. Why do you think that is?

I think I was so caught up in comparing myself to popular YouTubers that I looked up to that I tried to emulate their personalities instead of just being myself.

Do you think your break from YouTube will benefit your future videos and allow you to create content that’s truer to your personality?

Absolutely. My break from YouTube was probably the best decision I’ve ever made. I needed that time to reflect on why I started making videos and what my channel means to me. I also did a lot of thinking about where I want my channel to go in the future and how to start heading in that direction.

How do you plan to fall back in love with the content you create?

I plan to stop comparing myself to other people, and to start being unapologetically myself in my videos. Instead of second guessing my ideas and hesitating on creating content that may be a step out of my comfort zone, my plan is to just go for it and see what happens!

How do you practice self-care?

I try to meditate and journal as often as I can. Plus, the occasional face mask and spa day is always a great idea when I need to feel refreshed.

In “A Fresh Start,” you said that you’re not sure what you’ll be creating going forward. Have you begun to figure that out?

Yes and no. I have a few videos planned, and I have an idea of what I want my channel to turn into, but I’m going to take my parents’ advice and take the metaphorical steps that I see in front of me without worrying too much about the future.

Is there anything else you’d like to share or think would be beneficial for our readers to know about you or your channel?

I truly think that in all aspects of life, it’s always important to stay true to who you are and know that you are more than enough. That’s part of the journey that I’m currently on, and the best part about documenting that on my channel is being able to do it with a community of really awesome people.
